ENGINEERING ·
Planning a refit around the return-to-service date
A practical starting point for a clearer work scope and better coordination.
Read article +
A useful refit brief starts with the operating requirement: when does the vessel need to be back in service, and what work must be completed before that date? Sharing this context helps the owner, yard and service teams organise the same priorities.
Build one work list
Bring planned maintenance, reported defects, survey needs and owner-requested upgrades into a single list. Identify the responsible party for each item and the drawings or inspection information needed to define it.
Resolve dependencies early
Discuss access, docking arrangements, parts availability and specialist attendance before fixing the sequence. A small task can affect a larger work package when both need the same machinery, space or inspection.
Agree what handover means
Set expectations for progress updates, change approval, inspection records and acceptance with the client. A shared definition of completion makes the final handover clearer.
Every vessel and contract is different. A planning conversation with the operator and engineering team is the right place to turn these questions into a project-specific scope.
Why maintenance planning and biofouling awareness belong in the same conversation.
Read article +
Organisms that accumulate on a vessel’s underwater surfaces are known as biofouling. They can be carried between locations, creating a risk of introducing species into new environments.
Consider the whole maintenance history
IMO guidance highlights factors such as a vessel’s operating pattern, hull design, coating condition and cleaning history. Keeping these records together helps the technical team plan the next maintenance discussion.
Cleaning requires care
In-water cleaning can damage coatings or release organisms and waste. The method, facility and applicable local requirements should be reviewed with qualified specialists before work is agreed.
Connect readiness with stewardship
For operators, responsible hull care is an opportunity to consider vessel condition and marine biodiversity together. It begins with informed planning and the right technical support.
A starting point for conversations between marine businesses and local organisations.
Read article +
Healthy coastal waters matter to everyone who works at sea. Marine businesses and community organisations can start useful conversations by identifying a local need, a responsible partner and a realistic contribution.
Start with a defined activity
A shoreline clean-up, awareness session or waste-segregation initiative needs clear roles, permission from the relevant site owner and a suitable plan for collection and disposal. The activity should match the partner’s experience and the location’s needs.
Think beyond collection
IMO identifies effective port reception facilities and waste processing as part of reducing marine litter. Moving waste from one place to another is only a first step; a suitable onward route matters.
Report outcomes honestly
Record what actually took place, acknowledge the partners involved and share results that can be checked. This article introduces a collaboration approach; it does not announce a completed Wintech clean-up project or an existing nonprofit partnership.
